Death and the King’s Horseman by Wole Soyinka

"Death and the King’s Horseman" is a powerful tragedy by Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, based on real historical events during British colonial rule in Nigeria. The story centers around Elesin Oba, the king’s horseman, whose duty according to Yoruba tradition is to commit ritual suicide after the king dies, so he can accompany the king’s spirit to the afterlife. This act is not seen as a loss but as an honor and a vital part of maintaining cosmic balance and community harmony. As Elesin prepares for this sacred duty, he indulges in worldly pleasures one last time, marrying a young woman on the same day he is supposed to die, which shows his lingering attachment to life.

The tension rises when British colonial officers, especially District Officer Pilkings, learn of Elesin’s intended ritual suicide and decide to stop it, believing it to be barbaric. Pilkings, who does not understand the deep cultural meaning behind the ritual, intervenes and imprisons Elesin, preventing the ceremony. This interruption is not just a personal tragedy but a spiritual and cultural disaster for the Yoruba people. The community is outraged, especially Elesin’s son, Olunde, who has studied in England but returns home and deeply respects his culture. Olunde is horrified by his father’s failure to fulfill his duty and ultimately takes his place, dying in his father's stead to restore balance and honor.

In the end, Elesin, filled with shame and grief, kills himself too—but it is too late. His failure to act at the right time has already caused spiritual damage. The play ends on a tragic note, highlighting the clash between indigenous traditions and colonial interference, the burden of duty, and the devastating consequences when sacred customs are misunderstood or violated. Through this, Soyinka emphasizes that cultural practices must be seen in their own context, not judged through the lens of another culture.
